  1. Based on the knowledge that i have gain thus far, Sociology will be valuable to me in my future professional and personal life by reminding me not to look at things as society see it but to exam why thing are sociology constructed that way. Sociology gives you the ability to make decision based facts and not opinon or socially correct ways of doning alone.

  2. Since being in this class, I've learned the main difference between what psychologists study and what sociologists study. Psychology is more concerned with individual and individual factors. Sociology is concerned with social factors or those things bigger than the individual. Being in this class, I've been trying to definitely see things with more of a sociologist eye. I think that in knowing a little bit about sociology, my future profession will benefit and personal life will as well.

Once upon a time, I may have become frustrated with how certain people behave and why they do the things they did. I thought that maybe someone is loud, rude, and disrespectful because that's just who they are. My initial thought was never that perhaps they were raised in an environment where that's how everyone behaved and that's what was excepted. Perhaps people who are more reserved and quiet that enter that loud, rambunctious environment may be considered "rude" for not interacting and being as outspoken there. They may be considered "acting funny" to those who are use to very loud, live people.

As far as in my future profession, I will definitely have to use a sociological way of thinking. As a black female, a lot of people may seem to feel threatened or uncomfortable by a black woman in certain positions of authority. A lot of people think they're better suited and shouldn't have to show as much respect. If my position is such one that leads me to be in charge and has me to deal with those type of individuals, I'll not think that he/she is treating me a certain way because they blatantly don't like me or have some type of racist, discriminatory attitude . I'll think that their social environment has had a major affect on how they act in certain circumstances. I'll also base what I think to be complete ignorance on a lack of integrated values and understanding stemming from the society in which some people were raised. I'll definitely think more sociologically as opposed to individualistically.

  4. Based on the information that I have learned so far about sociology it will be beneficial to me. First, in the field that I am studying which is political science sociology will allow me to take a broader view of why people vote for a specific candidates and not the other. Knowing by sociology that it is more then their own personal views but what did society contribute to their decision making process. Secondly, in my personal life sociology has help me to understand that sometimes we don't really know why we do the things that we do because we never questioned them. In my personal life I will start asking more question about the way that things are. Also sociology has helped me to see that the way that we think things are-are really not that way but are the opposite.

  5. Sociology is the study of relationship between individuals and society. My plan after graduation is to become a police officer. One day I hope to obtain the position where I am the chief of a entire police station. I know that I am going to have to understand how things around the station and in the station works. A officer of the law is a huge target because many people look at an officer as a threat. The main goal is to protect and to serve not to do harm. I appreciate this class because it teaches me to not just look at a problem and see how I am going to be effected by it but how society will be effected by it.

  6. Since being in Sociology I have learned several things that can help me make decisions in my personal and professional life. The first thing I learned was that sociology is the study of the relationship between individuals and society. After learning this I can now take more time to fully think things do before I make decisions. For example when I get ready to purchase items, I can take my time to figure out wheater society says its right to buy this or is it myself who thinks its right to buy these. Also when it come to my professional life i can think more outside of the box due to the fact that I now know how sociology works.

  7. Based on what I have learned so far I am excited to learn more. My father has always urged me to think outside the box but it is very hard when you have external influences becoming stronger and stronger each day. I have always considered myself to be one of those people who thought for herself as different but knowing that thinking of myself as unique is just as the same as being the same. I am just excited to expand my mind and with that knowledge expand other peoples’ minds also. So onward we go!

  8. Based on what I have learned. Sociology will help me as a future psychologist to look at things deeper than just lookin at the top layer. Not just judging a situation right off hand but finding out the sociological reasoning behind the situation.

  9. I Don't want to dream my dreams anymore; I want to catch them. Sociology is helping me to be able to look at the social constructions of this world. Not only to see them but look at it all-sided. We always say that we need to look at the other side of the fence on things but what happend to understanding the pattern on the fence and the maker of the fence. I want to work for UNICEF. United Nations International Children's emergency Fund. We help children with their health and educcation and protection. In order to conform to these children and their needs to really understand what they are going through i have to engage into their world. I am going to have to look at "either and or"; instaed of one. I will need to understand the nature of society to see how it is constructed so that I we(UNICEF)will be the chain reaction towards change for these children.

  10. Based on what we have learned i understand that sociology is the study between an indivdual and the society. Learning about how the society affects the world as a whole can help us all with whatever it is we want to become after graduating. Knowing what to pretty much expect from the society when out in the real world can always be helpful to me and give me a heads up. Sociology

  11. I have learned many useful techniques from been in sociology for just a short period of time, that it makes my spirit eager to want to learn more form a sociological point of view. First i learned that the definiton of sociology-is the study of the relationship between indivduals and society. This concept help me in my life and career based on the fact that now i can compare society and individuals, on a more understanding level. This is an advantage to me because this process give me the time to think things through before making a decsion. The most important thing that i learned was society can set standards for you to live by, butn it is your choice of free will weather you decide to live up to those standards. Always be yourself and do not worry about what society have to say about you!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. BASED ON SOCIOLOGY AND WHAT I HAVE LEARNED FROM THE CLASS I FEEL IT WILL ALLOW ME TO UNDERSTAND PEOPLE BETTER.ALSO TO GET A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF HOW OTHERS THINK

  13. So far this course has helped me to become more open minded. Instead of just accepting that people just "are the way they are", I now know that that is untrue. People dress, act, talk, and express themselves through learned behavior. Whether it's something they were taught as a child, something they seen on tv, or changes they felt necessary just to fit in with friends, its all for a reason..... it was socially constructed. 14. As far as my personal and professional settings, this course has helped me to not pass judgement on an individual based soley on my personal values and beliefs. In a social setting such as a club its ok to dance with someone that I usually wouldnt dance with, he could be Mr. Right!!! Lol. In my professional setting I've also learned to interact with people that I usually wouldnt, they may be able to teach me a thing or two about the job. La-Toya Turner

  15. My understanding of sociology is to appoach situation in a hold new light. Take the time to realize is it something i truly believe in or was I Social Constructed to feel and think that way. So I'm going to take full advantages of all sociology has to offer and i know at the end of the semester sociology is going to emerge us as students and encourage us to test everything we choose to believe in.

  16. Knowing sociology is valuable for me because it can help me to better understand society and how humans interact socially. This is important for my future professionally because I will have insight into different perspectives that can help me enhance my ability to interact with coworkers and my superiors at my job. An important aspect of sociology is culture. Learning about different cultures is also important to my future and can enhance my personal life giving me knowledge and understanding of others.

  17. I feel that what i have learned from this course will have a tremendous effect on my professional and personal life. Sociology will play a very big role in my professional life because i plan to be a social worker. Being a social worker in some cases i might have to look at a childs surrounding to get to the root of an issue. And that is what sociology is about looking at how a persons surrounding or society effect that person. Sociology will help me in my personal life as well because it teaches you to look at how society shapes how people act and why they do the things they do.

  18. "I don't want to dream anymore; I want to catch them" says Kimberley Martin. I love that statement because it is so inspiring. Most of us have dreams but we cant make those dreams happen if we do not act upon it. I would blame society for not allowing people of color an opportunity to make those dreams come true. Some people of color have to prove themselves so much that they belong in that setting. Why is society molded to believe all the sterotypes that are made? For instance, the "unique" names, why is that such a big deal? Why can't people name their children what they want to name them? When a parent gives birth, they dont think about what will happen if I name my baby this. That time is a joyous occasion for the parents. It may seem like I am rambling but I have so much to say. People don't want to set their child up for failure by giving them those names. I do not think so because most parents want their child to be what they could not be. I asked my mom why did you name me Shavonna? She said because I wanted you and your sister's names to rhyme. She did not consider naming us names that mean something. Looking back at how hard my mom worked, I now want to make it so she will never ever have to work again. I have to stop thinking about what everyone thinks of me. I have something to prove to myself that I can go out and catch my dreams. I will definitely do so.

  19. I think that learning Sociology helps point out whats my views and curiousity about how I and others are influenced by society. It will help my in dept concerns about the social world abroad and the difrrences within. As an intended major of Social Work, it will give a better understanding through the process of questioning and research to manage a wide range of issues that I will most likely face. I think this course of study is the definite backbone to the world of Social Science.

  20. Based on the class and what I have learned so far I have gained an understanding of why people act a certain way or the resoning behind the decisions I myslef, as well as others make and the thought process that we goes along with it. Being a social work major, I feel that this will help me a lot because I will have to make decisions. Social workes as well as sociologist study human behavior but our focus is on changing and improving lives. Being able to have a better understanding on why people act a certain way will definitely out me at an advantage because I will be able to make better evaluation for the people I would work with. Someone made a point in this blog that they have become more open minded and I really agree with that because I feel that same way. When you understand why a person acts a certain way its easier to be less judgemental.

  21. Well the knowledge that I have learned in intro so far has changed the way I view things. I have learned to most choices people make there is really no right or wrong answer. Now I am more open to things that before I was totally biased to. Now it is like I do not hold people accountable for going against social norms that society has constructed us to believe and act on.

  22. When I first chose sociology w/ criminal justice as my major I figured it would be an interesting field, and that I wouldn't really focus on the sociology aspect of it but more on the criminal justice side. Now I feel the complete opposite. The way I looked at the society prior to taking this class was probably the way most people see society (as this entity that just does things and we have no control over it) Yet, now with the knowledge of what sociology is, and information that I have learned about social construction I can control more of what I thought I didn't have control over. i.e decisions like what to wear and what to eat, how to conduct yourself and just daily decisions that we take for granted everday.

As far as my profession, I feel the most important part of criminal justice is acknowledging the fact that there is something that has caused the behavior in question, and there is a reason the person felt a need to do whatever it is they've done. The next step is to figure out if there is a solution to the problem on a society level so that the problem dosen't persist. I feel sociology will prepare me to do this very well!

  23. I just love the statement that Kimberly Martin made "I Don't want to dream my dreams anymore; I want to catch them." I love this statement because it reminds me of why i came to college. The reason why im at Shaw is to get that much closer to catching my dream. That statement made me realize that i have to stop slacking and get on my job because i dont want to dream my dreams anymore i want to catch them.

  24. I AGREE WITH JAMES MCINTOSH IT'S TURE AT FIRST SOME OF US ONLY THINK ABOUT THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE PART BUT TO UNDERSTAND A CRIMINAL YOU MUST UNDERSTAND THEM A A PERSON FIRST.THIS CLASS WILL ALLOW US TO BREAK THINGS DOWN SO MUCH WE MIGHT EVEN CHANGE OUR WAYS.ANDREA SUMED IT UP WHEN SHE SAID THIS CLASS WILL GET US READY FOR THE PROFESSIONAL WORLD.

  25. Sociology gives us a better understanding of the world that we are in. Sometimes people can be blind to some things that happen to them because of the way that they were taught. Also, catching our dreams will take presistance because it is so easy to sit around and do what you want to do when you want to do it and how you want to do it. Going after a dream will take sacrifice and determination as well. You will always have an adversary but as long as you are focused you can and will catch your dream.

  26. All my life i heard the statement that everything happens for a reason. Now I believe that so much more because of sociology. Everything that surrounds us have some type of effect on someone.... or society as a whole.

Sociology will help me in my career because i am also studying psychology because i like to know what is on peoples minds. But know i can get a better general idea about what they feel by taking their surroundings into account.

Sociology helps me out personally because my favorite question is WHY...

I tend to keep to myself most of the time and just watch what goes on around me and how people act. I try to think outside of the box but its kind of hard when the box of my mind is contained in the box of my surroundings, which is contained in the box of my society. I as I learn more about sociology i plan to grow mentally and go outside of all of those boxes and look inside.

  27. I have a question. We all say that this sociology class would help us not look at the social constructions that life plays a part of, but look at things from the other point of view. But I really wounder how much of it we will really use espeacially if it is a situation that effects us as individuals. Anything in life will take sacrifuce and determination like Jeremy Best has said, but would we be able to flip the adversary of individuals to give us the fuel to our fire. Or would we go back to point A because of frustration and be biased about our oppinion only. Life is filled with fuzzy things in life; so will the fuzzyness be the reason why we will not look at all three paradigms and limit oursleves to one because it is too much to chew.

There was a quetion raised in the sociology book that said: How have scientist learned to cope with the fuzziness or indeterminacy of the physical world.-Some physical scientist seem to ignore it. Will we do the same?

  28. I agree that sociology has added meaning to the phrase "everything happens for a reason." To piggyback off of what Kalyn Spells said, sociology has kind of made me understand that a little more.

Going back to what I said earlier about people and their environments. If when younger, a "loud" individual was raised around other "loud" individuals, chances are they too will be loud. As individuals meet that person, they probably wonder why that person is so loud. Well, to that individual, they aren't loud at all. They come off as loud for a reason. Their environment shaped them that way.

The same kind of thing goes for people who might be quiet, friendly, energetic, violent, aggressive, or anything else. They are that way for different reasons. Everything happens for a reason.

I am currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in business management and international relations with the hope that I can go to Law school and get a degree in International Law. Sociology will be very critical tool in my field because of the broad insight it can bring.
Law is a very controversial area, especially if one decides to make ac career out of it. One has to understand why the law was made and the situation(s) surronding the creation of that law. Diverse interpretation of the statues occur in different courts for differents reasons. Understanding how the society operates can not only increase your knowledge but can also help you predict what the outcome of these laws may be if evr put to the test.

  30. I learn so much from this class everytime that we meet!! Not only have i broaden my perspectives about society from different points of view, but also apply this thinking to my personal life because when making a decison i now sit down and weigh out all of my options before just jumping into something. THis can benefit me in my career based on the fact that been a lawyer you have to be able to look at situations from different perspectives, and also be able to persuade the jury that your client is innocent. Thinking outside the box allows lawyers to be able to try to firgure out different solutions from different poins of view of the case. The biggest and most important thing is to always be yourself no matter what!!!!!!!!!!! This class teaches you that also, you never have a wrong answer in this class and i think that is great because now more students are comfortable about answering questions aloud during class dicussions!!!!!!!!!1

  31. Sociology will help me in my professional and personal life by helping me understand what, how and why society thinks the way it does. Why is it that we have to go by what society says instead of stepping of changing things. Professionally, this class will help me see what outside influences the world could have on my client. Personally, this class will help me figure out myself and who I am. Also, give me a better understanding of how much of an impact or control society has on an individual and not to be afriad to challenge anyone or society.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I also think that sociology helps you develope better ideas. Sociology is a subject that i believe everyone should study because i honestly think that in many cases people tend to make assumotions off of what society preveys to them. Studying sociology helps you think outside of he box and it gives you a much deeper understanding of society.

  33. I completely agree with Teliah, many people unintentionally become closed-minded to the outside world including the immediate people in their environment such as their peers and co-workers. By being in this class you are almost forced to think outside your "box", at least take into consideration the different lifestyles and beliefs of others and really become interested in the dynamics they consist of. This is something they will all can use thoroughout the course of life and are also good fundamentals to pass on to our children. By learning to handle people and situations with an open mind all of the existing bias about different races and cultures will eventually become non-existant. La-Toya Turner

  34. This course has really helped me understand certain things that I mioght've had questions for inthe past. But there are somethings that I still don't understand. We all say this course is helping us to undertand the society better but I feel like there's always going to be that remaining question: Can we fix it? I was watching the Tyra Banks show last week somethime and there were people who just judge others based on what they looked like and how they dressed. There were four people on one side who judged and on the other side there were the four people who were getting judged. They really said some hurtful things about these people ands they had to watch every second of it. Some of the things they said I didnt know some people really felt that way. But at the end mostly all of the things hat were said about all these people who were being judged were wrong. Even though they wre wrong about mst of these things they still had it deep in their mind that that's what they think and they were sticking to it. It's sad to see people can really be like this. So taking this course I think will help me understand people better and try not to judge people by the way they look and dress. Hopefully this course can also help us learn how to accept others and their culture and also teach others about it along the way!!!

  35. Based on what I have learned so far in sociology I would describe sociology as the study of human behavior. Sociology can assist me in my personal and professional settings. Frequently I have discovered that in many situations it appears to be difficult to remain open-minded and think outside the box, considering that I am close minded quite often. Honestly, I always make sure that people understand my point of views; however, I realize that I don’t take the time to understand the next individual. For example, if a female have numerous of sexual partners I would consider her as a women with low self esteem that continue to degrade herself, but I haven’t took it into consideration that maybe that is the only life style that has been exposed to. Instead of considering the possible reasons to explain her action I became judgmental. This class has had an effect on my cognitive thinking, enabling me to look at a individual background, environment and personal beliefs before making judgments.

  36. Based on what I have learned in sociology is looking at the bigger picture. This can help me in my professional, and personal life because when im faced with a situation i can understand that there is more that meets the eye. Also my learning about sociology helps me understand why people act or react the way they do. I always felt that the best way to communicate with people is to understand who they are, and why they do certain things. Sociology can help me everyday, all day looking at the world from another perspective and not only think inside the box, but outside as well. Sociology makes it seems there is a whole other world to understand. It makes me think in a three dimensional way and not only one dimensional.
